Shahtoot | Mulberry Tree
Shahtoot, also known as the mulberry tree, is one of the most rewarding outdoor fruit trees for Pakistani gardens. It grows fast, handles summer heat well, and gives sweet berries in spring while its wide canopy provides cool shade all season. One healthy tree can become the centerpiece of a lawn, farmhouse or orchard.
Popular Types of Shahtoot
Three types are common in gardens. White mulberry (Morus alba) is vigorous and produces light-colored, sweet berries. Black mulberry (Morus nigra) gives dark, juicy fruit with a rich, deep flavor. The long shahtoot type has slender red to purple berries with a soft, honey-like sweetness and is a favorite for fresh eating.
Growing Conditions
Mulberry needs full sun for healthy growth and a good harvest. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of about 5.5 to 7, and a little compost at planting time helps the roots settle. The tree is well suited to warm regions such as Punjab, Sindh and KPK, and it becomes drought tolerant once established.
When to Plant
The best planting seasons are spring (February to April) and autumn (August to October). Water regularly during the first year, then reduce as the roots spread. Grafted plants often start fruiting within a few years.
Size, Pruning and Pots
In open ground, a mulberry can reach 15 to 25 feet, so keep it about 5 meters from walls, drains and pipes. Trim dead or crowded branches in winter to control shape and let air move through the canopy. With regular pruning, it can also be grown in a large container.
Uses
Mulberries are enjoyed fresh and are also used for jams, juices, syrups and desserts. The tree provides shade, attracts birds, and its leaves are outdoor plants in Pakistan used in silkworm rearing.
