Barrel Cactus Plant

A Round, Golden Statement Plant

Few succulents look as bold as the barrel cactus. Its rounded, ribbed body is covered in golden spines, so it stands out even among a crowded plant shelf. Botanically known as Echinocactus grusonii, this desert native is a hardy succulent that grows happily both indoors and outdoors. Hani Plants delivers healthy barrel cactus plants across Pakistan, so you can bring home this sculptural beauty easily.

Sun, Soil, and Water: The Basics

Barrel cactus asks for very little, but it does need a few things done right. First, give it bright light with at least five hours of direct sun. Indoors, a south-facing window works well. Next, plant it in gritty, fast-draining cactus mix, because soggy roots are its biggest enemy. Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. Meanwhile, cut back watering in winter, when growth slows.

Where It Looks Best

Thanks to its compact, slow-growing habit, this cactus fits almost anywhere. For example, place it in a terracotta pot on a sunny balcony, or set it in a gravel bed with other succulents. Likewise, a group of different-sized barrel cacti creates a striking desert-style corner. Besides, it needs little attention, so it suits busy households and beginners.

Handy Care Notes

• Pot choice: Use a terracotta pot with drainage holes.
• Temperature: Keep it in a warm spot, and bring it indoors if the weather turns frosty.
• Handling: Wear thick gloves, as the spines are sharp.
• Repotting: Repot every two to three years using fresh cactus mix.
